Adaptive Swim Program
Magical MerKids

The Magical Merkids Story

Some things take time to get right.

Magical Merkids didn't start with a business plan. It started with a question I kept asking myself as an aquatics professional: Why is it so hard for families with differently-wired swimmers to find lessons that actually work?

I watched it happen with kids who belonged in the water — kids who were curious about it, drawn to it — struggling in programs that just weren't built for how their brains and bodies learn. Their families kept trying. New program, same story.

That wasn't okay with me.

So I started learning. I leaned on friends whose kids had been through program after program, asking them what helped, what didn't, what they wished existed. I researched. I read everything I could find. I talked to families, to professionals, to other aquatics instructors. And I kept following the thread until it led me to something I hadn't expected: Swim Angelfish methodology — a specialized approach with roots in physical and occupational therapy, designed specifically for swimmers with different sensory and learning needs.

I went all in. That training led me to become a Level 1 Swim Whisperer Instructor, and everything I'd been building toward started to click into place.

But here's the part that took me longest to say out loud: this work isn't just professional for me. It's personal.

I have ADHD. And within the last few years, I've come to fully understand something I'd always felt but never quite had words for — the water has always been my place. My place of regulation. My place of calm. Where the noise quiets and my body finally knows what to do. Where I feel focused, grounded, and free.

That realization changed how I teach. Because I don't just understand these swimmers from the outside — I know what it feels like to be one of them. To need something a little different. To light up when you finally find it.

That's how Magical Merkids was born — not overnight, but the way anything real is built: through time, through listening, through lived experience, and through refusing to accept "good enough."

What We Believe In

Every swimmer who comes to Magical Merkids deserves three things, and we build every lesson around them:

Water Safety — for life.
Not just a set of rules to memorize, but an understanding of water that grows with your child and your family. Safety looks different at 4 than it does at 14 than it does at 40, and we teach it that way.

Functional Swimming Skills.
This is the heart of our work. We meet every swimmer where they are — honoring their sensory differences and individual needs, and helping them understand how their body moves in the water. Not a generic swimmer's body. Their body. That's the foundation for real, lasting skill.

Social Swimming.
Because swimming isn't just a survival skill — it's a life skill. We work toward the joy of it: the games, the jumping turns, the camaraderie of sharing water with others. (And yes — when is it safe to jump? That's part of the curriculum too.) We want our swimmers to belong at the pool, at the lake, at the birthday party. In the water and in the world.

Magical Merkids exists because every swimmer deserves a teacher who sees them — not their diagnosis, not their challenges, but them. The kid who lights up when they finally float on their own! The teenager who's been afraid of deep water for years and takes their first brave leap. The adult who just wants to keep up with their grandkids at the beach someday.

That's the magic we're here for!

We'd love to share it with your family. 💙
